You’ve probably heard the phrase, “everybody has to start somewhere” thrown around a lot in your life. Well, that old phrase has never been truer than when it’s applied to reading tarot cards. Tarot readings are something of an art form, and, as such, giving them well takes time to hone and perfect. The good news is that no one expects you to be an expert when you’re just starting out, and you shouldn’t either! However, you can make your beginnings a little less “bumpy” if you’re willing to follow a few simple tips.
Try One Technique at a Time
Advanced tarot card readers typically know a lot of different techniques and use them as they see fit. When you’re just starting out, however, don’t pressure yourself to learn a bunch of different techniques. Instead, focus on getting good at just one. Once you’ve mastered that technique, add another to your repertoire. By not overwhelming yourself and building strong skills one technique at a time, you’ll quickly find that you’ve amassed an impressive collection of skills. Before you know it, you’ll be using all the spreads, reversed and standard cards, and all kinds of decks. Until that happens, however, take it easy and focus on honing and perfecting one skill at a time.
Do Some Reading
Pretty much everything you’ve ever wanted to know about tarot reading can be found in a book or online. There are so many good sources of information out there that you’re really doing yourself a disservice if you simply go off what your teacher shows you or just read the instructions that came with your pack of tarot cards. Read, read, read about the art of tarot. Learn about its history, different methods, the various schools of thought, and even what people who don’t agree with tarot reading have to say. The more you expand your mind and open yourself up to new knowledge and information surrounding tarot reading, the more you’ll grow. Even opposing views can help you to learn to stand up for and support the art of tarot reading. You’ll be in a much better position to do that, of course, if you know your stuff!
Believe in Yourself
A lot of people falsely believe that they can never be good tarot card readers if they don’t have some kind of psychic or “magical” ability. That’s not true at all though. Everyone has the potential to be a good tarot card reader simply by tapping into a gift that we all possess—the gift of intuition. Some of us listen to our gut more than others, and it’s those who do who make the best tarot readers. If you’re not someone who is very in-tune with yourself and others, don’t worry. Intuition is a skill that can be honed over time. Working on something you can control- being a more intuitive and emotionally sensitive person- rather than something you can’t- like not having psychic abilities- will bring out the best in you and your gifts.
Finally, never underestimate the value of staying positive. You are bound to run into some problems and challenges as you strive to become a skilled tarot card reader. That’s okay! Just stay positive, keep believing in yourself and your abilities, and before you know it, you’ll be an experienced tarot card reader capable of teaching others all about tarot.
