Telekinesis, also called psychokinesis, is the ability to move objects with the mind. It is a psychic ability to manipulate physical objects without interacting physically with it. There is no solid evidence that the ability does exist. However, there is no true evidence fully disproving the ability. Many scientists and paranormal investigators have conducted tests, but most have come out inconclusive or have been challenged in some way.
Types of Telekinesis
Telekinesis is divided into two different categories. Macro-PKare effects that the naked eye can see. Micro-PK effects items on such as small scale that scientists have to use statistics to detect the effects. An example of micro-PK is influencing a program or random number generator.
Different Abilities
Telekinesis includes various purported abilities. These abilities affect different objects such as the air, metal and levitation. Since the 1800s, many people have come forward claiming to have telekinetic abilities ranging from levitation to moving solid objects without touching them. Levitation is the most common ability, and one of the easiest to duplicate with trickery. Manipulating objects is another very common ability, but this one is also wrath with deception. Metal bending is an ability that was proved false in every experiment from the 1970s going forward.
Belief
In a Gallup poll, at least 29% of individuals polled said that they believed in telekinesis. This belief leads many to be susceptible to fraud and deception by some psychics and magicians. However, another poll conducted by a British psychologist found that a majority of magicians felt that telekinesis is not real.
Fraud
With the vast amount of fraud by people claiming to be telekinetic, a majority of scientists and government officials do not lend credence to the possibility that it might exist. Out of thousands of fraudulent cases over a 100-year period, only one that was studied could have been legitimate. A yogi named Swami Rama was able to control come of his biologic functions, including his heart rate. He was also witness to have moved a knitting needle without contact and without causing an air current that made the movement. The scientists that studied his case concluded that even though there was not an air current, that he had to have fraudulently moved the needle, even though there was no evidence of this.
Is it Real?
There is mostly evidence that disproves the telekinetic ability. After over 100 years of study, the American government could find not one person who had a true telekinetic ability. A majority of the cases were frauds. Few cases were unable to be proven either way. These cases suggest that there could be something to these abilities, but so far, there is no scientific proof.
Telekinesis is an interesting ability. However, it lives in the world of fiction until someone can prove that it does truly exist. Many Americans and people across the globe believe in it, adding to the hype that it does exist. There is no scientific evidence that states that telekinesis does exist, but some cases the government studied could not be disproven.
